| NEW: Study: Exercise slows Alzheimer's brain atrophy Sun, 27 Jul 2008 19:49:06 -0400 NEW YORK (AP) - New MRI studies suggest that patients with early Alzheimer's disease who exercised regularly saw less deterioration in the areas of the brain which control memory and balance. Research presented today at the 2008 International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease in Chicago showed that exercise positively affected the hippocampus, one of the first parts of the brain to suffer damage. Exercise and physical fitness have been shown to slow age-related brain cell death in healthy older adults. Earlier this month, a preliminary study was published showing that exercise may help slow brain shrinkage in people with early Alzheimer's disease. The researchers found that patients with early Alzheimer's had a "significant relationship" between the size of key brain areas associated with memory and fitness, unlike healthy older adults. Those patients with better fitness ratings had less brain tissue atrophy and those with worse fitness had more brain damage. |
| Rising Gas Prices Boost Motorcycle Sales Sun, 27 Jul 2008 18:35:00 -0400 Rising gas prices have led to an increase in motorcycle sales and that is leading to and increase in the number of people killed in motorcycle accidents. According AAA, Ron Pollock said, "I've been away from it for a while and I decided to go back to riding a bike because of the gas prices." Pollock is just one of many folks merging into a growing trend to save money by taking to the roads, on two wheels. Jim Hardison works at Ron Ayers Motorsports in He added the biggest mistake people can make when looking to buy a bike is getting on something that is beyond their riding ability. "People get in over their head; these bikes will absolutely run way faster than their cars. They break a lot better and they just do things that people really are not accustomed to and ready for," Said Hardison. Even though Pollock has been riding off and on for 30 years, he still signed up for the beginner riding course, through Pollock said, “When you start getting in places like The course teaches the proper ways to brake, turn and deal with hazards on the roads. Paul Roland is taking the course, before he even buys a bike. Roland said, "There's just so many things that can go wrong and that you don't know from just driving a car." Greg Williams has been teaching these classes for three years and said more people have signed up as gas prices have increased. When it comes to navigating the open road on two wheels, Williams said, “You can never be too safe." According to AAA, motorcycles make up 2 percent of vehicles on the road, but account for 12 percent of all accident related deaths.

| NEW: Carlos Sastre wins Tour de France Sun, 27 Jul 2008 12:08:49 -0400 PARIS (AP) - Carlos Sastre has won the Tour de France in one of the closest finishes in the 105-year-old race. He is the third Spaniard in a row to win cycling's premier event. Sastre held his 65-second lead over Cadel Evans of Australia. The 21st and final stage was won by Gert Steegmans. The 89-mile ride to the Champs-Elysees on Sunday was largely ceremonial because Sastre all but assured himself the victory a day earlier in the final time trial. The 33-year-old Spanish rider is among the oldest men to win the Tour for a first time. It is his sixth top-10 finish in the race. As in the last two years, this year's Tour was plagued by doping. Three riders were ousted in drugs busts. |
| Summer Storms Sun, 27 Jul 2008 15:06:17 -0400 Hi, I'm Storm Team 9 Meteorologist Scott Sumner. A cold front moving through the Mid-Atlantic states this afternoon will approach Eastern North Carolina tonight and eventually washout, leaving us with scattered storms this evening. Overnight lows, with the scattered storms around will vary, but most inland towns will see lower to middle 70s, while coastal communities will be in the middle and upper 70s. Where some rain occurs this evening, if the winds are light and clear skies prevail after the storms dissipate, fog could form and linger into Monday morning, otherwise we can expect a mostly to partly cloudy sky in the morning. During Monday afternoon, the forecast calls for partly cloudy skies to continue with highs in the lower to middle 90s. A few pop-up t-showers are possible during the mid and late afternoon with the inland progresssion of the sea-breeze front, otherwise it looks to be a dry day. As we go throughout the week, each and every day, we have a 20% chance or greater of hearing rumbles of thunder, but the bigger story will be the heat that should be with us during the mid-week period. The thermometer will look to climb to the upper 90s for Wednesday and Thursday, before "Mother Nature" tries to bring another cold front into the East. This front will look to have a little more push behind it and should cross our coast late in the week bringing in a slightly drier airmass. With regards to the tropics... THE HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL PREDICTION CENTER IS ISSUING PUBLIC |
