| Presidential Hopefuls Have Plans for War on Terror Sun, 20 Jul 2008 23:35:00 -0400 US presidential hopeful Barack Obama has wrapped up his visit to Afghanistan, he says more must be done to combat the Taliban there.
“I think one of the biggest mistakes we've made strategically after 9/11 was to fail to finish the job here, focus our attention here. We got distracted by Iraq,” Obama said.
Obama praised the troops stationed in Afghanistan and called the country "the central front on our battle against terrorism."
He has said that on his first day in office he would give the military a new mission: ending the war in Iraq.
Presumptive republican nominee John McCain has called Obama's proposals naive and premature.
McCain said in his radio address Saturday that the "surge" in Iraq is working and he would apply its lessons to Afghanistan:
"The war in Afghanistan has taken a bad turn, it must be quickly reversed. Security in that country has deteriorated. And our enemies are on the offensive. And it's precisely the success of the surge in Iraq that shows us the way to victory over the Taliban,” he said in his radio address.
With the resurgence of the Taliban in Afghanistan and a rising US death toll in the country, both candidates agree that more resources are needed in the war-torn country.
Both have called for more troops to be sent to the region. |

| Rain needed for wildfire Sun, 20 Jul 2008 23:17:46 -0400 Tropical storm Cristobal helped the Evans Road wild fire just a little bit with a half inch to one inch of rain on Saturday night.
As the system continues to move up along our coast firefighters hope more rain comes instead of more winds. They fear the winds will stir and deposit embers across fire lines. They also fear that lightening will strike in the area.
The wildfire has burned more than 41,000 acres for about two months now. |
| TS Cristobal Gives Carteret Emergency Personnel a Chance to Practice Sun, 20 Jul 2008 18:36:00 -0400 If you're keeping score at home, there's no doubt the Crystal Coast won the battle with Cristobal.
As the tropical storm skirted Carteret County, it left plenty of high surf and some rain in its wake. That prompted red flag warnings up and down Bogue Banks.
While some surfers braved the water for a chance to ride the big swells, the minor storm also allowed the county's emergency management team to practice all the policies and procedures it has in place -- without the pressure of a big storm bearing down on the coast.
“It's a good dry run for us,” said Emergency Management Director Jo Ann Smith. “We get to practice using a lot of the resources that we would use, such as Web EOC and our communications and resources like that. We get to practice them and make sure we know how to use them and that they work correctly.”
Smith says all the county's plans worked well -- and thankfully, there was no storm-related damage. |
| Cristobal Doesn't Hit Hard Enough Sun, 20 Jul 2008 18:35:49 -0400 Despite the warnings about Tropical Storm Cristobal people still headed to the coast today. Dan Blank said, “Something like this is not a really big deal to us." The Blank family moved to "We were there when 5 hurricanes hit Showers passed over the area throughout the day but when the sun came back out, folks were back on the beach. Curtis Adams surfs these waters regularly and for him, this kind of tropical storm is exactly what he looks for. “It really makes the waves really good the longer the storm stays off shore," said But what was perfect for surfers posed a potential hazard for some beach goers. Lt. Brian Heugel said, "It's dangerous, it's probable someone could drown today and were keeping people in below their knees that way no body gets into too much trouble." Despite the warning signs, lifeguards waved people in. Even "If you don't really know what you’re doing and you’re out there, you can really get sucked out and you can get panicked and it just pays to know what you’re doing on a day like today," said And with hurricane season just beginning, things could get a lot worse before they get better. |

| Wildfire officials hoping NC rain will help Sun, 20 Jul 2008 13:44:41 -0400 COLUMBIA, N.C. (AP) - Officials helping to fight a wildfire that has burned thousands of acres in eastern North Carolina hope Tropical Storm Cristobal will bring heavy rain before moving away from shore. Fire spokeswoman Melissa Yunas said the area received less than a half inch of rain Saturday night. A trace of rain had fallen Sunday, and forecasts were for an inch or more. Yunas said firefighters were concerned that the storm could bring only winds that would spread the blaze and endanger firefighters by blowing over trees whose roots were burned. The fire has burned 41,553 acres in and around Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge since it started June 1. State officials have lifted a ban on open burning in 10 eastern North Carolina counties. |

(AP) - A forecaster says Tropical Storm Cristobal should pull away from North Carolina after dumping locally heavy rains on the Outer Banks. Meteorologist Rich Bandy at the National Weather Service in Newport said Sunday morning the storm had 50 mph winds east of its center, out at sea. Bandy says winds on the coastal side of the storm are about 25 mph and will have little impact unless it strengthens. Bandy says there is a good chance of heavy rainfall along the Outer Banks, where the center of the storm is expected to brush by Sunday before moving out to sea. Officials warn even if the weather improves, Cristobal will create dangerous rip currents along the North Carolina coast. |

| “Cristobal” Moving Away, Heat Moving in! Sun, 20 Jul 2008 20:46:32 -0400 Hi, I’m Storm Team 9 Meteorologist Scott Sumner. T.S. Cristobal will continue to move northeast tonight and away from the area on Monday. Most if not all the showers are gone and the wind gusts have diminished as well. With a partly cloudy sky and light winds this evening, some patchy fog may form due to the residual moisture leftover from any inland areas that saw rain on Sunday. On Monday, we will see a mostly sunny sky and some form of west wind in the wake of our tropical storm, making the start of a new week, blistering hot. Daytime highs on Monday and even into Tuesday, will be near 100 degrees, with a heat index ranging between 100-105! The National Weather Service may need to issue a heat advisory if those numbers are reached. By Wednesday, the thermometer will show more seasonal temperatures for July, but the dry start to the week will be replaced with typical daytime thundershowers each afternoon. AHHHH July in Eastern North Carolina!! Stay cool folks :-) With regards to the tropics for the Atlantic Ocean , Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico... 1. | UPDATE: Mullen worries about troop withdrawal timeline Sun, 20 Jul 2008 11:53:39 -0400 WASHINGTON (AP) - The Pentagon's top military officer says a fixed timetable for U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq could put political and economic progress at risk. Admiral Mike Mullen says the best way to determine troops levels is based on conditions on the ground. He tells "Fox News Sunday" that current U.S.-Iraqi talks of a "general time horizon" are the right way to go. He adds that they "all" share the goal of bringing all U.S. forces home. Asked about the possibility of withdrawing all combat troops within two years, Mullen says "the consequences could be very dangerous." The Joint Chiefs chairman also expressed concern about what he called a "porous border" between Pakistan and Afghanistan allowing al-Qaida and Taliban insurgents to join forces and find safe havens. On possible fallout from any conflict involving Iran, Mullen says the U.S. is fighting two wars right now and doesn't "need a third one." |
