| Church Burns Following Lightning Strike Sun, 6 Jul 2008 23:35:54 -0400 Sunday services were put on hold this morning for one town in the east. Lightning struck the Bright flames cut through the night as crews battled a fire that started when lightning hit the church steeple and when the flames were out and the sun was up, burnt timber and crumbled bricks were all that was left. Perry Mason has been a member of Free Grace Wesleyan for 30 years and watched as the fire destroyed his place of worship. "When I got here I found the church basically fully engulfed in flames. It was an awful sight, just a terrible sight to look at," said Mason. Pastor Clint Nelson said, "Although it looks terrible and out hearts are broken, we just leave it in God’s hands." Pastor Nelson has been a member of this church all his life and pastor for more than a decade. He said, "This is a special place for our people but I’ve talked to them today and their so optimistic. We’re not going to use this as a stumbling block but a stepping stone." The church was originally built in 1939 and while last nights fire all but destroyed the past, there is still hope for the future. An addition was built just a few years ago but fire crews were able to stop the flames from spreading to it. "We still have our sanctuary and we still have a place to come and a place to plan for the future," said Mason. It’s that optimism that Pastor Nelson says will pull his congregation together. "When you have difficulties or things get in your way it has a tendency to bring the church together and I am expecting that to happen this time," said Nelson. With the smell of smoke still lingering in the air from this morning’s tragedy, people are already talking to Pastor Nelson about rebuilding. The Harkers Island Fire Department, along with the SBI will conduct an investigation into the fire starting tomorrow. Pastor Nelson said they plan to hold services again this Sunday. |
